You can love Jesus, know the scripture, and still feel trapped in patterns you cannot break. That tension is exactly where this conversation goes. We sit down with Shonna Vaughan, a board-certified health and wellness coach and clinical herbalist, to talk about why “take your thoughts captive” can feel so hard in real life, especially when anxiety, hypervigilance, and future-tripping kick in. We start with prayer and a surprising question: What if success is real, but we miss it because it does not arrive in the gift wrap we expected?

From there, we dig into the hidden resistance that shows up when someone wants to change but cannot. Shonna explains how Positive Intelligence (PQ) gives clear language for the unseen obstacle, the saboteurs, and the inner Judge that sabotage progress even when the plan is good and motivation is strong. We connect that to root cause healing, not symptom management, and explain why chronic stress must be addressed if we want lasting change. We also explore what it looks like to pursue health and restoration as whole people, body, emotions, and spirit, because nothing happens in isolation.

We close with the heart of it: self-compassion as self-care, living from belovedness, and learning to pause and ask Jesus for perspective instead of labeling circumstances as good or bad.

If you have ever “given it to God” and then taken it right back, this will feel uncomfortably familiar and deeply hopeful. Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review with one takeaway you want to practice this week.

Welcome Back And Guest Introduction

SPEAKER_01

All right. Welcome back to PQ for Christians. And we have a special guest here today. We're going to do an interview with a fellow PQ coach and community member, Shauna Vaughan. Shauna, how are you today?

SPEAKER_00

I am doing great. Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

I'm excited about this because it's been a while since I've had the opportunity to interview a coach. But in our last group meeting, you said something during the meeting, and immediately the Holy Spirit was like, invite her on the podcast to discuss. So my first question for you is, and I'm going out of there's no right way or wrong way. We're just going to have a coach approach conversation with two fellow believers that love the Lord. Is that okay?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yes. Very much okay. Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

So what do you hope would come out of this conversation today?

SPEAKER_00

So I was spending time in prayer before I got on Zoom with you. And my my prayer was that the Lord's favor would be on us and that he would grant us success. But for that success to be

Let God Define Success

SPEAKER_00

in his terms, for his purpose. And I know for myself, you know, that success could be, you know, drawing people into a more intimate relationship with him through the framework of PQ. So I know for myself and in my journey with Christ, there have been so many times in the past where I would read a scripture like taking our thoughts captive. And I would be like, Lord, this is so hard. You're you're telling me to do this, and I don't have the tools to do this. My hyper-vigilant, if you will, uh saboteur can just go crazy, and then I'm future tripping and I'm speculating, and I am in a what-if world, and I know God doesn't live in a what-if world.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

So my prayer for this time, success would be that the whoever is listening to this will understand that God has given us everything we need, regardless of what we need that for. He's given us everything we need. And this is a foundational tool for abiding in his presence and really having a walk with Christ that is alive and active minute by minute.

SPEAKER_01

And I so appreciate the fact first I want people to understand what you did. You prayed, and part of your prayer was that success be on God's turn. Because I think part of what's happening is we have an expectation of what success looks like. And when it doesn't show up gift wrapped the way that we have gift wrapped it, we don't recognize what success is. And I believe God is reshaping us in the way that we can understand that success is defined by God. Absolutely. So I let's have a successful time in our conversation here. Okay. So I uh before I go into my deep questions, and I think part of what it was is is at our June meeting, you mentioned about what you were doing, because I know you're board-certified health and wellness coach and a clinical herbist. I think you you were sharing more about what you were doing within your organization, within your coaching, and how you were, I believe, like touching on physical health and emotional health. Can you share more first about what you're doing and how God is leading you in how you're doing it?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. In terms of coaching, I've had clients that that come to me and they are, if you will, like a type A, and they know what their goals are, and they absolutely want to achieve those goals. So they will go after it. And then you have clients that come to you that or come to me that that absolutely know, you know, they're looking at their labs, they they know their issues, they live in their body, they understand that they need change, but there is this huge resistance to that change. And it's most of the time, it's this unseen obstacle that that that has no nothing tangible to it. And as you've said in other meetings, you know, there's no language to put around it to understand what that is, to help them get from point A to point B. You know, the the knowledge is there, the protocol is there. The and truly, even the internal motivation can be there, but but the resistance, the immunity to change, if you will, is so strong that it is keeping them stuck. And in PQ language, it's sabotaging. Yes, it's sabotaging their progress. So, in terms of coaching, it's about introducing the person to PQ so that they can understand the foundation and the framework for which these saboteurs can be identified. Yes, for understanding that the thoughts are not from them, and helping them have the tools of recognizing who they are in their true essence self, the spirit, the spirit that's in them that God gave them that is going to live for eternity, to kind of reconnect with that, and and in some simple ways to kind of look and see like who's running the show.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, well said, yes.

SPEAKER_00

And and even for you know, clients that are believers and they have a strong prayer life or something, and they're really trying to let go, they're trying to give things to God because of saboteurs, you we take those things back.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And and we may give it, but then we take it back.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And as they hold that, it then influences everything. And that's where you get someone who who wants progress, who wants change, who wants to embrace health, but they can't. So what PQ does is it really like pulls the curtains back and allows that person to really get to know their true essence self, to connect with who they were, who they are, and who they're going to be and what God purposes them to be.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And and that is how I'm doing it. And it helps for me as a coach, too, who was very much a you know, hyper achiever, doer, um, it has helped me personally focus on the human being in front of me, the essence of the person in front of me, and not the did you do this, did you do that? Did you reach this goal? Did you, you know, all the numbers in the checklist? It helped me shift from from that to that, which as I've learned my sage mindset uh influences their mindset. Yes. And and not just how the coaching session goes, but even in between the coaching session.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Beautifully said. And now I I remember what it was that you said. Because you you said that you in your coaching practice and with PQ, you're helping people uncover root causes. Right. And it's like of your health, of health challenges. And I'm gonna be as bold as to say, actually, because there's spiritual challenges there too, right? I mean, as believers, we understand that the spiritual reflects in the natural, right? And that's what people so how are you going about with God's help, right? God working with you, yes, affecting root causes, because that's profound. Because you're you what you're saying is you're not dealing with symptoms, you're acknowledging symptoms, but you're allowing God to go to the root.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So symptoms, symptom management, you hear it everywhere, right? That's what the pharmaceutical world and everything is about, symptom management. And that might give someone relief for a month, three months, maybe three years. But unless the root cause has been discovered and healed, then true healing has not taken place.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

And and it always has to be whether you're dealing with something that is like dis-ease in the body or disease in the body, it's all about finding the root. And just like we know through PQ, nothing happens in isolation.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So in PQ, we have our saboteurs and we have our judge. And of course, the judge is involved in

Resistance To Change And Saboteurs

SPEAKER_00

in every instigating and working with every saboteur. Well, when you're looking at disease and you're you're symptom mapping through someone's lab work, whether it be hormonal or just blood labs or maybe a gut microbiome kind of thing, none of that is happening in isolation at all. And the way God has designed our bodies is there's communication with everything.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So our gut and our brain have the vagus nerve that they're communicating. What we eat, the way God designed food and herbs and plants and leaves is there's a language in all of those things He created, and they perfectly communicate with our bodies. So you're looking at so many factors when you're looking for the root cause, because one thing is connected to another thing and it's influencing that thing. And you know, stress. So everybody knows that stress is harmful. Well, there's good stress and there's bad stress. Bad stress, chronic stress is is very harmful. And when someone has chronic stress, it's typically from something that has to do with a saboteur.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well said.

SPEAKER_00

So whether that's, you know, hyperachiever or controller or you know, even a pleaser, I mean, because that causes stress.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

When you're not adhering to boundaries, you're causing stress for yourself.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And that that stress has to be dealt with in the process of reversing disease. So therefore, you have to look at the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And see, and I I'm so appreciative that you said the physical, the spiritual, and the emotional. You've basically said that we're attacking this from every aspect of who we are as God's creation. Right? I mean, and then when you leave one out, you're there, there's like to to say it how you said it, there's no true healing. And I think that that is that is a deep challenge right now, right? Because we have some only dealing with physical or only dealing with the emotional or the mind aspect of it, right? And and I think that's where uh PQ for Christians as a community, we have all identified that we need all three. Like with three part beings, we need we need all of us, right? We need it all there. So, oh Shauna, this is awesome here. So before I go deeper into this uh interview here, share with people how did you get started? How did you get introduced to PQ? How did God lead PQ to you or you to PQ?

SPEAKER_00

So I already mentioned that one of my top sabotaurs, saboteurs was, you know, hyperachiever with restless coming quickly in there. So in my coaching, I've been coaching for 10 years, and in my coaching, I would notice that I was far too focused on the doing and not the being.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And being board certified and having taken many, many classes on psychology and the motivation and how to motivate, how to help people find their internal motivation and all of that. I I knew that that my coaching needed help. I needed to better coach the being. I needed to be able to be still with the person.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and not just actively listen, but to be still with them and actively listen.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So I took a course on a continuum education course on just that, coaching the being and not the doing.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

In that course, one of the fellow coaches in the course said, Oh, this reminds me of something that I learned in PQ. And I perked up and I thought, oh, PQ, what's that? And then she told me about it. And just as and I just love that, like, that's how God does it, right? Sometimes I mean, it's just these little nuggets. And I followed up on it. And when I followed up on it, I then applied for the scholarship. And I think that particular cohort at the time was already been running. So when it came time for the next cohort, I got an email and I jumped in. So the funny thing is, is that my entire motivation was for my coaching for my clients because I really do coach from a point of I just want healing for people. Because I believe that Christianity and the gospel is about healing. It's about healing humanity, healing, healing the individual hearts, and healing creation. And so I come from it from that perspective. So it was all about how can Shauna be a better coach so that she can help her clients achieve their goals. So again, we're kind of back to the doing.

SPEAKER_01

Sure, sure, sure. Yep. But God had a different plan, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, because I then got into PQ, and in the first, I don't know, day, probably, two days, maybe I realized, oh my goodness, this is for me. Yeah, yeah, this is not for Shauna, the coach. This is for Shauna, the the being. Shauna. This is this is for me, and I need this. And within with every week, with every session, I I had just like these big why questions. And I think I'm not alone in that, you know, you do something and you know, you live with yourself. So you know when it's

Root Causes In Body Mind Spirit

SPEAKER_00

a repetitive thing in your life, and you just go, why? Why do I do this? It's just this big why. And and PQ answered all of that for me. It answered the why about myself, my behavior, my successes, and my failures and my relationships. It just answered so many whys.

SPEAKER_01

See, and I'm oh my goodness, thank you, Lord. So even from the point of your opening prayer, right, was how can this benefit someone else? Right? That this episode be used for someone else. And I believe it's already there. We're we're already we're at success based on what God is already doing. But I love the fact that you acknowledged that your coaching needed help. Do you do you see how that is, right? And that that is the first step. That's what God is asking for us to acknowledge and to recognize and to put it out there. And then you took a training. And within the training, God uses someone else to say PQ, and then that catches your attention, and you followed up with it. Right? Yes. And then on top of that, when you went into the training, you were still in, like I, you know, I said the gift box, like gift wrapping. Oh, for my clients, for my clients, and then God just reveals, okay, yeah, and it's also for you.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And I and I think that's that's what I want people to understand. Take God, let's allow God to come out of the box that we've put him in.

SPEAKER_00

It was his loving kindness. Yes, isn't it? Isn't that so beautiful? It could have been done so many different ways, but he did it like you're describing in a box. And yes.

SPEAKER_01

So so Shauna, in in this aspect, so how has PQ as a tool, right? And I want to acknowledge PQ as a tool. I I'm gonna keep saying that. How has it assisted you in how you embody love for yourself and for others?

SPEAKER_00

So for myself, it has become the ultimate source of self-care.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_00

I am dramatically more compassionate with myself.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yes, wow.

SPEAKER_00

And and I I might want to add years ago, like in 2020, I wrote a course called The Joy Solution, and it was to help people rediscover joy, the joy that is promised to us over and over and over again in scripture, right? And even having written that and having done it myself and done it with groups of people, I still was hard on myself. So it wasn't until PQ and understanding that these thoughts are not my thoughts, this has influences that can be understood and worked with or silenced, or just the like you said earlier, the acknowledgement that these things exist. So when we are loving and compassionate with ourselves, then we are more open to receive God's love and his grace and compassion. And through that, we now have a filling that is extended out to those who we do life with.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So naturally, if I am more loving and kind to myself, that's going to come through in how I show up for my clients, how I show up for my husband, my adult sons, etc. And so that's probably the biggest way it shows up is just through through loving kindness that is, you know, rooted in authenticity, not in just doing a kind thing, but actually being kind. And that can show up in so many different ways with ourselves in our thought life or how we express ourselves to other people. But other more subtle ways was just the recognition of because of the judge. I would almost be operating, if you will, behind enemy lines. Like I think I'm doing things right, but once you have that awareness, you realize that you're operating out of a saboteur mode, which is, as Shazad teaches, I mean, it's contagious.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So recognizing that when I fall behind what I'm calling the enemy line, when I fall behind that, and and by the enemy line, I also mean this just I'm not in a space, if I'm in a space that's not connected with the spirit.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Then, you know, I'm going to, you know, respond differently.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And and it's catching that. And it's even more beautiful when you catch it before you do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And you can and you can stop. So that awareness is freedom. It's it's absolute freedom. And that freedom allows me to live with greater empathy and compassion for those. And I also used to operate from a point of believing that I knew other people's thoughts.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I knew other people's motives. Like I just was so sure I knew what their motives was. Well, what I've learned not only does scripture teach us differently than absolutely. Yes. But it's the framework of PQ and the and the awareness that that creates and the language that it gives you, it helps you to absolutely recognize, okay, no, I don't.

SPEAKER_03

I don't.

SPEAKER_00

Only, I mean, scripture tells us only God knows the heart.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I don't. And only my saboteurs are going to try to influence me to think that I do. So if I'm operating with loving kindness and empathy and compassion, I absolutely recognize I don't know their thoughts. I don't know their motives. And I just need to love them in the way that I'm being led to love them.

SPEAKER_01

Shana, I I I love how you have lived the journey, right? And we we are calling it in the community living loved, right? And and once you learn, right, to live loved, love flows out, right? The the love of God has to flow out because we get so full of it, it just overtakes us and it goes out to others. And it's not something that we set out to do. Do you know what I'm saying? It's like we didn't like make these core values that we're gonna get to this place. The journey that God has taken us on is to

How Shauna Found Positive Intelligence

SPEAKER_01

this place of acknowledging and recognizing how to live loved or live from God's perspective flowing out of us.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yes. And I think that for myself and many, many, many people, fully embracing the the width and the depth. Depth.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Can be difficult.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yes, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

And it's the saboteurs that and the judge that gets in the way because we're not loving our true essence self.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Wow. And I I am gonna say it is this way is is it because this is this has been part of I'm gonna call it my calling now, because it's truly the the message that God has given me. It's living from that place of our belovedness, but knowing that we are beloved before we believe. Love happens and happened before we ever believed. And that's what God is just oh my goodness. This is this is awesome. So so again, so from this perspective, so how has PQ as a tool assisted you? Right, I know you shared, but how has it assisted you in how you view circumstances now versus how you did before you went through training?

SPEAKER_00

I think it's summed up in the word perspective. Because life is not a one-way street. And yet we live as if it is. And I think in James, in the book of James, where he says, you know, we fight and quarrel because we don't get our ways.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

You know, we want what we want. People just want what they want. And life circumstances don't always give you what you want.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And if you if you live in the light of of allowing your judge to label your circumstances, then your your happiness is gonna teeter on the next best circumstance. Or you're gonna be angry or some reaction because the circumstance didn't do that. So PQ for me has been about recognizing that I don't have the capacity to label things good or bad.

SPEAKER_01

Wow.

SPEAKER_00

And therefore, my perspective needs to come from a realization of there are multiple things going on, and I need to stop and ask Jesus, okay, Lord, this is how I'm feeling, but how do you want me to feel about this? I want to call this bad. I want to call this, but I'm bringing this to you so that you can tell me how to feel. So it's brought me to a point of deepening my daily dependence and walk with him so that there is that communication going on and having that helps me. And then staying and practicing PQ reps and staying present helps me to release and say it's not what I wanted. The picture doesn't at all look like what I wanted it to look like, but I need to let you paint it. So that is where it has assisted me in dealing with circumstance.

SPEAKER_01

Shauna, I I just hope people really like take a moment to ponder and reflect and contemplate on what you just said. Because that for me is everything. And that that is why we created the community, right? To to really listen and to hear what you just said. Like you made a choice to invite God into your day at a deeper level. And like we all say we do it, right? But to be able to acknowledge that and to say, no, I'm choosing now. How do you want this to be? And you use the term you said release. I just I say let go. Right. Same thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my goodness, this is this is wonderful. And Shana, so being around the community, what are you sensing is happening from a spiritual perspective? What what what what are you sensing?

SPEAKER_00

The first thing that comes to mind, and this is what I know, I believe I joined the community in February of this year. And every time I'm at a meeting, I the the the Holy Spirit is always present. Yeah. I mean, he's

Self Compassion And Living Loved

SPEAKER_00

he's he's always there. I'm always moved emotionally. I my spirit feels fed when we have finished. I go back and listen to the recording, the podcast that you post, you know, the the centering prayers, the contibulous prayers that y'all put together. I mean, it is the community is an incredible resource for deepening our connection and and walk with Christ because it's on such a deep spiritual level. And I love too that that the community embraces everyone, and there's it's it's it's like we're the bride of Christ.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, isn't it incredible?

SPEAKER_00

It's like we're a little church, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Isn't it incredible?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, absolutely. And and we're we're this this church, and and it's operating in such harmony, yeah, and and and the goodness of God, like I think about you know his his glory, the beauty of his glory being present in our sessions and the way everything, everything just flows and the comfort level, you just don't get that in other places. I mean, and and I think from my experience, everybody in every meeting has just felt so comfortable and open and honest in their sharing and and encouraging. And and then we also have the aspect of let's pray about that, right? You know, let's join together. So it's it's a very uniting, and also I I I love the way you have challenged us to look at scripture, find the sabotage throughout scripture, look specifically even at the seven churches and revelation, and know that this has always been. Yep. This has always been. And as you've said so many times, we now have a language, yes, and an operating system, and a toolbox for effectively using this so that we are free and open for God to use us for his purpose.

SPEAKER_01

Wow, Shauna. And that's what makes the tool sacred, right? That's what makes PQ sacred when we when we do it this way. And I I'm sitting here and uh like a tear came to my eyes because I was talking to Rod Miller, which is one of the founding core members of of the PQ for Christian community, and and we were sharing about how this community, how we are operating in Kochania, was that community and acts that operated out of a place of love. And you you said it so beautifully, like we are operating in God's ordained way, like from all different beliefs, right? But yet we're common in Jesus. Like it's man, this is this is awesome. Oh my goodness, this is so wonderful. So, so Shauna, as we get ready to kind of wind this interview down, I'm gonna put a twofold question out here for you. So as you reflect on your journey, like you've been in coaching now for 10 years and you've implemented PQ into your coaching, as you reflect on your journey, what do you hope people feel when they're in your presence before they ever attempt to change anything? And what do you hope people will get out of this interview after listening to this interview? What do you hope they get out of it?

SPEAKER_00

So in my coaching, I want my clients to feel heard that that is the ultimate for them to feel heard and feel seen. Because when you when they feel heard, then they're also feeling seen because I'm taking in their words and their presence and their continents and and everything. And the reason that's so important is because we just we each we have a need, right? We all have a need within us for connection and community and love. I mean, we want to give love and and feel the love, and part of that just comes with the acknowledgement of you're important and this time is for you.

A New Lens On Circumstances

SPEAKER_00

And I want to hear how you feel about this, body, mind, and spirit. I don't not just, oh, this hurts or this aches or this number's not good, but how are you really feeling about this? So to hear them on a much deeper level. And I would say for anybody listening to the podcast is to recognize, and and I say this in my in my coaching and like on my website is you know, God has given us everything we need to heal. And I used to think I knew I knew all of the answers because I know his plant world and and and I believe in, you know, I just I just believe in how he designed our bodies. And I know he's about healing and restoration. And you know, I won't get into the, you know, obviously there's different kinds of healing and you know, healing comes in different, you know, ways, right? But to recognize that PQ, the the the language, the the operating system of PQ is is truly foundational to to healing. And and you know, you're talking to someone who thought that, you know, oh, you know, it's the botanical world, that's it. Oh, it's the gut microbiome, that's it. Oh, it's the gut brain connection, that's it. No, it's PQ, it's understanding the the saboteurs and how they're operating and how they're running the show. And once you do that and you acknowledge that and you understand where to go from there, that is our spirit. And that is what is gonna live for eternity. You know, it's our spirit that we present to Christ. Yeah, he calls us home. It's it's not gonna be this flesh body that I'm trying to heal. It's it's not gonna be my achievements, my successes, or anything else or my failures. It's it's the the spirit. It's it's the true essence of who I am and who you are that we present to him our character and how we lived. And PQ is the foundation for doing it the way Jesus has called us to do it by do not worry, do not fear, take your thoughts captive. I mean, all of those things that can seem humanly impossible, they're not impossible.

SPEAKER_01

Shana, I just what just came to me as you are saying this in is is Matthew 11 when Jesus said, Come unto me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Community Life And Final Takeaways

SPEAKER_01

For my yoke is easy and my burdens are light. And I and I sense, and I will just continue to just keep saying this, that for all the coaches or people listening to this, is keep using PQ as that sacred tool and allow God to just transform and go to the root to cause healing in spirit, soul, and body.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Shana, for sharing some of your time with me.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you, Donald.
